The Associated Press reported on Friday September 29, 2006 that Twenty people were evacuated from their homes briefly when seven cars of a Canadian Pacific Railway train derailed near Loretto in Independence, MN. The evacuations Thursday night were voluntary and a precaution because two of the cars had contained anhydrous ammonia in the past, though they were empty at the time of the derailment, Hennepin County sheriff's spokeswoman Julie Anderson said. No injuries were reported. The 122-car train was headed from St. Paul to Calgary. The Star Tribune on Saturday reported that Police said four of the cars were empty tankers used to haul anhydrous ammonia, two were hopper cars carrying sand and one was loaded with railroad ties. Nothing leaked or spilled, and the derailment's cause is under investigation, said Laura Baenen, railway spokeswoman. She said the homeowners were allowed to return about 2 a.m. after a hazardous materials inspection team cleared the scene. Baenen said 450 feet of track and related wiring will have to be replaced and that section of the Chicago-to-Vancouver, British Columbia, line was expected to reopen early Saturday. Dave Dvorak (Lake Sarah Heights Dr.) sent the above pictures of the train derailment, he reports that an axel melted (see the first picture) which was still warm the next morning. A guy from CP Rail told Dave that when the steel melted the axle leaned down close to the ground. When the car passed over the place where the rails cross, it flipped the car, taking others with it. Thanks for the photos Dave! (click on the small photos above to see full sized images)

FINAL SCORE: GRAVITY 1 - LIFT TRUCK 0
Lift truck falls into the lake! The winner of the AW CRAP! contest would be the crew working on the Becchetti house on South Lake Sarah Drive. On Sunday 6/11/06 a lift/scaffold truck fell into Sarah in late morning. The pictures below (click on thumbnail images to view larger photo) show the lift overturned partially in the lake while firefighters and police officers try to mop up and mitigate the potential damage from the leaking diesel fuel. KSTP 5 showed aerial video of the scene after the firefighters had installed a floating oil containment system. The lift truck was back on its wheels and out of the lake by Sunday evening.
